Rethinking Photography 1+11: Narration and New Reduction in Photography
by Helmut Weber
Publisher's Description
Painting's rejection of depiction as condemned photography to depict. Most Photographs follow Baudelaire's view: 'I Want to depict things as they are, or better yet as they would be, even if I did not exist.' The question that remains unanswered, however, is that of the artistic relevance of these pictures formed as dispatched. Can a photography really be practiced after modernism, which leaves what is specific to its medium unreflected, which clings to a figurativeness, gathering together a traditional repertoire of motifs and thus demonstratively concentrating on developing an external context? The issue here is the opaque side of the sign, which now evinces, unlike the transparent side, only a minimal object reference.
