Christian Wachter

Impressions D'afrique (German Edition)
by Christian Wachter
Publisher's Description
Austrian photographer Christian Wachter's work draws on historical fact and fiction - not as a celebration or documentary record of specific events, but as a collection of signs and signifiers which reflect on our interpretation of important historical moments. So the cover of this book is a decoy, not for those who expect images reminiscent of Leni Riefenstahl's expressions of Nazi Germany, but for those who might expect references to the French author Raymond Roussel. In the same way that Roussel's writing measured the endless distance from the viewer to the viewed, so Wachter's photos attempt to delineate this distance, at once immeasurable and non-existent. In this book, divided into three sections, the artist negotiates questions of identity and differentiation using images from Africa and Europe, and various media including video stills, drawings and classic analogous photographs. A surprisingly political book.
