Publisher's Description
This book is quite curious. The images are preceded by an artist's statement in Spanish, which, unless, one reads Spanish, provides no useful information about what one is about to view. After proceeding through the images--quaint interiors of aristocratic residences which use selective focus and are, at times, slightly blurred, as though the photographer were making these during a tour of the houses--one comes to the English translation of the essay. At this point, one is surprisingly informed that these are miniatures, built by Mrs. James Thorne during the 20s and 30s and currently housed at the Art Institute of Chicago. Immediately one heads back to the images to try and regain a sense of what is really being portrayed. Issues of the theatricality of the scenes, on display since 1954, as well as the stereotypes they perpetuate, come to mind. This volume is part of the superb publishing program at the University of Salamanca, Spain.
