Documenting America, 1935-1943 (Approaches to American Culture)
by Carl Fleischhauer
Publisher's Description
In this critical study of photographs made under the direction of Roy Stryker for the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information, the authors discuss the circumstances in which these pictures were made, the role of the government in the direction of the projects, and how documentary photographers work. The pictures are presented in fifteen different series and include more than one photograph taken of the same subject by the same photographer. In this way we are able to understand how photographs are presented in order to be consistent with government policy. An important and fascinating work.
