On a remote road deep in the Ozark hills a mysterious orb of light appears on chance nights. Locals have been fascinated by the phenomenon for over a hundred years and even the United States Army Corps of Engineers has tried but failed to discover its source. Artists Lara Shipley and Antone Dolezal have spent the past three years creating a body of photographs titled Devil’s Promenade inspired by the light phenomenon, the myths made by the people who live amongst it, and the unique culture of this region. In the first published book of this work, Shipley and Dolezal combine photographs based on Spook Light mythology with found photographs from this region and oral accounts of the Spook Light. The result is an intricate portrait of an insular community living in the heart of the Bible Belt, where the struggle between heaven and hell factors into every-day conversation. As the artists have stated, “We feel the frequent and mysterious appearance of the Spook Light has come to represent for the people we meet a desire for redemption and the fear of slipping into darkness. It is the sublime experience whose defiance of explanation provides a reprieve from ordinary life.” Spook Light Chronicles vol. 1 is the first volume in a series of three artist books published by Search Party Press.
