The Un-Gentrifed
by Najib Joe Hakim
Description

These are portraits of people who live and work in San Francisco’s Noe Valley and Mission District neighborhoods. Since 1990, these areas have experienced rapid socio-economic changes led by skyrocketing home values and rents. This process continues unabated despite the current recession. One result of this change has been the gentrification of the neighborhoods evidenced by the influx of hip, tech-savvy professionals driving luxury cars and SUVs, the incessant remodeling and enlarging of old Victorian homes, and the condo-ization of apartments. As in other parts of San Francisco, those who can afford the radioactive real estate prices are squeezing out the working class people in Noe Valley and the Mission District. But some hold on, protected by strict rent control laws or by the good fortune of already owning their homes.
