I was documenting AIDs patients living in San Francisco Single Room Occupancy hotels when I met a 19-year-old Julie Baird, a new mother who’d just found out she had AIDS. I photographed Julie and her family for the next 21 years. Julie would die of AIDS in the backwoods of Alaska. The purpose of the project was–is–to examine and explore fundamental societal issues surrounding poverty, drug and sexual abuse, welfare and family through one person’s life.
