Lisette Model (55)
by Elizabeth Sussman
Publisher's Description
"They are also very evident in the work of Lisette Model. Model made her name with her 1930s series of photographs of the decadent bourgeoisie of Nice, 'Promenade des Anglais.' Although she came from a wealthy family herself, she despised the apathy of her class and overtly criticized these people in her pictures. Her sympathy instead seems to lie with those down on their luck and her photographs of 1940s New York focus with warmth and compassion on the seamier side of life. She also made some extremely striking portraits of jazz artists, such as Ella Fitzgerald. One of her most famous images is Billie Holiday lying in state. As well as being a great photographer, she was an inspiring teacher - some of her most well-known pupils being Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Weber and Joel Peter-Witkin."-the publisher.
