Restless Decade: John Gutmann's Photographs of the Thirties

by Max Kozloff

Publisher's Description
Born in Germany and trained as a painter, John Gutmann first began photographing shortly before escaping Hitler's Nazis and traveling to the U.S. in 1933. Bringing a European artistic sensibility and fresh insight to his view of America in the Depression, Gutmann photographed what he found of interest in our way of life. It is most interesting to compare what Gutmann saw in America to the FSA photographs of the same time. The essay by Max Kozloff discusses this comparison and why Gutmann seems to have photographed a different America.
