Édouard Baldus

The Photographs of Edouard Baldus (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
by Maria Morris Hambourg
Publisher's Description
This first study of work by architectural and landscape photographer Édouard Baldus, includes an excellent selection of both his lesser known images as well as his classic railroad albums, all reproduced to capture the beautiful tones of the original prints. Though trained as a painter, Baldus experimented with photographic processes and achieved prominence through his images of the monuments of Paris, the construction of the new Louvre, dramatic landscapes of the Auvergne, and the floods of 1856. Anticipating the concerns of much later artists he focused on themes such as the effect of technology on the landscape and abstract design elements present in urban scenes.
