Create and Be Recognized: Photography on the Edge
by John Turner
Publisher's Description
The critical study of folk art, naïve art, and outsider art is established and thriving in all visual mediums except photography. It is this deficit of material that the authors Turner and Klochko unquestionably amend. The 17 artists presented in Create and Be Recognized were gleaned from scores of individuals discovered in a globally cast net. The book has the jocund quality of many Chronicle titles, but at it's heart is a serious endeavor both to offer a definition for 'outsider photography' and to delineate the criteria used for assembling these particular artists together in a first-ever volume of this type of work. The work naturally suggested three loose categories: collage (affixing photographs or photomechanical reproductions to a background); photo-collage (primarily photographs cut and pasted together to form a new whole); and works based on manipulation, including multiple printing, hand-coloring, and/or staging the subject to be photographed.
