Up Against It: Photographs of the Berlin Wall
by Leland Rice
Publisher's Description
In 1983, Leland Rice began photographing the Berlin Wall from the West German side. These images are of the brightly colored of the graffiti, pictographs, poetry, and slogans that covered the Wall. During this project, Leland Rice called himself a "visual anthropologist" documenting the strong messages and emotions conveyed in this visual way. These photographs are all the more valuable, now that the Wall is gone. The essay by Charles McClelland provides a history of Berlin in reference to the construction, consequences, and destruction of the Wall. This book is being published for the thirtieth anniversary of the construction of the Wall.
