Cindy Sherman: Untitled Film Stills

This book presents the series "Untitled Film Stills," which includes some of Cindy Sherman's most provocative photographs. Most date from the late 1970's, early in her career as an artist. In the tradition of Warhol, and grounded in the theoretical issues of the period, these works appropriate the images and style of the media--in this case, the avant-garde cinema of the 1950's and '60's. They represent an important development in Sherman's use of borrowed identities and mini-stories and the portrayal of emotional states, issues that continue to inform her work. Accompanying the photographs is an introductory essay by Arthur C. Danto, art critic for The Nation.
