Water Towers
by Bernd Becher
Publisher's Description
German photographers Hilla and Bernd Becher have for the past 25 years photographed various common structures throughout the world compiling what they call a "typology of topographies." These structures include mineheads, gas towers, framework houses, and in this volume, water towers. Each photograph is made in what looks like a similar condition, from the same view-camera vantage point, with the same cropping, tonality, etc. Elaborate measures--such as the erection of scaffolds and ladders, waiting for the appropriate light--are taken in order to insure a cool, consistently objective look. The sum total is essentially a catalogue of water towers, grouped according to the similarity of their forms. This is the first monograph of their work to be published here in the United States. A marvelously obsessive book, devoid of human life, but full of objective description of extraordinary structures. You will never view water towers in quite the same way after looking at this book.
