American Photographs: The First Century

This title, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art exhibition it accompanies, were both organized by Merry Foresta, author of the acclaimed titlesSecrets of the Dark Chamber, Perpetual Motif, and Between Home and Heaven. While particular emphasis is placed on the development of photography as an artistic medium and a scientific tool, Foresta is careful to support this argument with the work of lesser known, but intriguing photographers and images.
