Publisher's Description
Malaria taking its name from the Italian, literally means ‘bad air’ is one of today’s
major global scourges, causing between 1 and 3 million deaths per year of which
80% occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Without abandoning his deep aesthetic concerns
William Daniels has photographed this terrible pandemic from Uganda to Sierra
Leone, from Burkina Faso to Calcutta. His photographs document different facets of
this ongoing battle such as; the abundant rainfall that heralds new outbreaks of
malaria, the clinics that treat pregnant woman and children as far as circumstances
allow, the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets and the spraying of insecticides.
Taken with feeling and tenderness while depicting the reality and harshness of a very
real situation, images are presented in full colour, one to a page, and accompanied
by short explanations.
