About Dagmar Van Weeghel
Started photography in 2015. African women are often central in the compositions and the narratives of Dagmar Van Weeghel’photography. Though the images are often ethereal, saturated in color, and subliminal, Van Weeghel visually narrates difficulties experienced by African diasporians. Migration and identity are currently reoccurring themes in Van Weeghel’s work. The portraits not only portray the beauty but create an homage to their collective experience, and a tribute to their strength, resilience, and perseverance.
' I desire to offer another perspective of the way people see the world, and each other, through the stories I tell visually. I work with real people (non models) who often deal with feelings of isolation and the questions of identity. I often place my identity along with the people I portray in order to bridge cultural gaps and to promote the profound personal connection I have with the people I work with.'
