Denis Gillingwater at an early age attended classes at the Children’s Art Workshops of the Chicago Art Institute and Museum of Modern Art in NYC. A BFA and MFA in Painting were earned from the University of Cincinnati. He was one of five professors to institute one of the first interdisciplinary arts program in the United States at Arizona State University where he is a Professor Emeritus. Numerous one person shows include: New Museum of Contemporary Art, NYC; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Center for Contemporary Arts, Santa Fe; Bartlett Gallery, University College London; Phoenix Art Museum; and the Los Angeles Center for Digital Arts (LACDA). Numerous group exhibitions include: Artists Space, NYC; Art Basil, Miami; San Paulo Biennale, Brazil; Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver; Albuquerque Museum of Art and History; Phoenix Art Museum and Tucson Museum of Art. Numerous residencies have occurred with the most recent for two visitations at the American Academy in Rome.
