About Ferne Millen

Ferne Millen is multidisciplinary artist whose focus is on storytelling through photography and installation.

Born in Djilang, (Geelong) in 1978 Ferne’s love of culture and the land was nurtured from a young age by her parents who travelled to many national parks and communities throughout Australia.

Ferne was mentored in photography by the late Peter van der Veer whilst attending Geelong College and won the VCE Art Prize. Between 1998-2003 she attended Victorian College of Arts majoring in Photography and Theatre studies.

Ferne was selected as a dual finalist in the Moran prize with her Portrait of renowned indigenous singer/ songwriter Archie Roach and “Raphael and his Children” She was a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize (Australia) in 2014 and 2015 and recently won the Directors Choice Award for the Olive Cotton Portrait Prize. Ferne’s current project is a collaboration with local Indigenous people capturing their portraits and stories to be shared through an immersive sound and visual art installation touring Victoria, Australia.
