About Gerhardt Coetzee
Gerhardt Coetzee (b. 1983, Pretoria) is a Cape Town based photographer and educator.
He holds a B-Tech degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Photography from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. His work has traditionally dealt with the perpetual relationship between what has been and what will become in the context of South Africa, its landscape and its people. His more recent work has moved into a greater investigation of struggle, where change is the only constant, and the only certainties are birth, sex, and death. Pure, ecstatic, cathartic strife.
Amongst his accolades Coetzee has received two Sony Profoto Silver awards and two Sony Profoto Gold Awards for his Openspaces series. He was selected as an emerging creative at the Design Indaba Expo in 2009. He has received a merit award for the Sasol New Signatures competition in 2011, and his work is now part of the Sasol Permanent collection. Coetzee was also one of the ten finalists in the ABSA L’Atelier competition in 2011.
