I was trained in art at UC Berkeley, but turned to photography at the end of graduate school. I was immediately interested in the portrait, and because of that began with a 2 1/4 twin lens reflex. I also began to I look for a way to incorporate photography with paint and collage, and applied this combination to urban landscapes. But the portraits I have kept unaltered. In the 1980's I got a 4 x 5 view camera and discovered Polaroid Type 55 black and white pos/neg film. I began the self-portrait process with the Aids portraits, but used it in school situations and at Creative Growth Art Center.
