About Jordan Somers

Wandering, observing, acknowledging, integrating, I explore the ever-present moment of life unfolding unto itself, revealing the humanity and deeply embedded connections we inherently share, regardless of our struggles and quarrels within ourselves, with each other and with the planet. I strive to become acquainted with and befriend all walks of life, which inevitably leads to unexpected, unforeseen experiences to behold, love and lament. My work is largely documentary-focused, even in circumstances wherein the subject – whether photographed or recorded - possesses a staged component.

In placing energy into street, portrait and documentary photography and videography, I’m always searching for bold colors, geometric patterns and shapes carved out by light, forming the experience, the expression and significance. Black and white, high contrast photography – particularly in portraiture - elicits such a strong response, in its boldness and tendency to redefine a subject in form and tones. I place a great deal of emphasis on composition, inclusivity of the physical elements of the environment, even the bits that seemingly “get in the way,” regardless of location or vantage point.

It’s been a natural flow into this field of work, as was the case for my brother, Luke, who was also a photojournalist, and who captured the Arab Spring from 2011 to 2013 whilst residing in Yemen. This is a connection I strongly embrace and grieve, and I continue to channel this energy into my craft, forging new relationships, creating new projects, and capturing the raw, pristine moments that we create, but don’t necessarily value.
