Through her work, Karla Leyva is interested in exploring how the current system of production and consumption of mass media images molds subjectivities and bodies that ceased to be docile and disciplined towards be flexible and anxious, responsible for themselves, concerned with individual well-being and with overcome the limitations derived from their organic materiality such as aging and death. By means of a variety of supports -painting, installation, sculpture and photography–, she works with materials that come from the cosmetics and wellness industry such as face masks and makeup; as well as tools used in the field of photography, cinema and video as tripods and scenic lighting.
Leyva has exhibited her work in Colombia, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Mexico City, where she currently lives and is member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (National System of Art Creators).
