About Maarten van Schaik

My autonomous work is made during long walks in the city and its outskirts. I worked in such various places as Las Vegas, Sevilla, Bangkok, London, New York, Amsterdam and Brussels. Chaos is the terrain in which I make my best photographs. Inside the complexity of the city, I’m looking for “black holes” or “non-places”, where light, materials, lines and strangers play together inside the frame of my camera. I don’t see my pictures as pure registration; instead I feel a strong connection with painting and music. My work has been exhibited in museums , photo-festivals and galleries such as: Paris photo, FOAM museum, Seelevel gallery, Van Zoetendaal gallery, Frans Hals museum, Zandari gallery Seoul, Art Rotterdam, Unseen photo-fair among others.
