About Maria Sturm
Maria Sturm was born in 1985 in Ploiesti, Romania and lives in Germany since 1991. She's completing her MFA in Photography at Rhode Island School of Design in June 2017 and is a Fulbright and DAAD scholarship recipient. Maria won several prizes such as the New York Photo Award 2012, the DOCfeld Dummy Award Barcelona 2015 with “Be Good” and the Student Award for Innovations in Imaging 2017 from the Society for Photographic Educators
with “You Don't Look Native To Me”.
Meeting the Turkish photographer Cemre Yesil in a month-long residency and workshop with Antoine d'Agata in Marseille 2012 has led them to a collaboration about the Birdmen of Istanbul in 2014. “For Birds' Sake” was widely published (e.g. ZEITmagazin, British Journal of Photography, Colors Magazine, The Guardian) and exhibited internationally (e.g. Daire Gallery Istanbul, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, La Fabrica Madrid, Pavlov's Dog Berlin, Bitume Photofest Lecce, Organ Vida International Photography Festival Zagreb). For Birds' Sake is published as a photobook by La Fabrica Madrid.
