Maria Sturm was born in 1985 in Ploiesti, Romania. She studied Photography at University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld (Diploma 2012) and at Rhode Island School of Design (MFA 2017) and is a Fulbright and DAAD scholar. “You don't look Native to me” received a GS Grant in 2016 and the SPE Student Award for Innovations in Imaging 2017. The work was shown at the German Consulate New York, Clamp Art in New York, Encontros da Imagem 2017 and shortlisted at the La Fabrica Book Dummy Award. Maria has won several prizes including the New York Photo Award 2012 and the DOCfield Dummy Award Barcelona 2015 with the work “Be Good”. The work "For Birds' Sake" in collaboration with Cemre Yesil was published as a photobook by La Fabrica Madrid, featured in Colors Magazine, The Guardian, BJP, shown at Bitume Photofest, Organ Vida, Deichtorhallen Hamburg and shortlisted for PHE OjodePez Award for Human Values 2015, Arles Author Book Award 2016, Prix Levallois 2017 and Renaissance Photography Prize 2017.
