About AULIAK - Matias Martinez Casais

AULIAK is the photographic practice of Matías Martínez Casais, developed in collaboration with Mónica Bellés de Villa, Studio and Editions Director. Rooted in over 30 years of contemporary dance across international stages, AULIAK translates choreographic thinking into still image. These works do not document movement; they suspend it, revealing the underlying structure of gesture, tension, and spatial composition.
Each image is physically constructed and captured in-camera. No AI processes or digital fabrication are involved. The work unfolds through controlled staging, where the body is directed with choreographic precision and recorded as a singular, resolved moment.
Faces are often withheld, allowing the body to operate beyond identity as a primary visual language. Working between choreography and image-making, AULIAK compresses time into stillness while retaining an internal sense of rhythm.
The practice is developed in series, where each image functions as part of a larger sequence shaped by discipline, repetition, and structural coherence. Produced as black-and-white works and released as limited, studio-controlled editions, AULIAK maintains a rigorous framework across its oeuvre.
Based in Barcelona and internationally oriented, AULIAK develops a distinct visual language for collectors, galleries, and curatorial contexts.
