A native New Mexican, Mike Butterfield spent the better part of 20 years in the San Francisco Bay Area pursuing a music career. The lure of wilderness constantly beckoned and many excursions in the California wilderness were taken. Upon his return to New Mexico in the fall of 1992 Mike began photographing in earnest. Widely published; Mike’s photographs appear in numerous books, magazines, calendars and postcards. Mike, along with his wife Susan and his two daughters: Michelle (Byron), and Sara continue to explore New Mexico’s outdoor riches and along with friends and fellow mountain enthusiasts frequently make trips into the back country; both summer and winter to photograph and, basically, “soak up” the bounty that is New Mexico. Although Mike photographs in other states of the west he considers himself a regional photographer and concentrates mainly on his home state of New Mexico.
