About Natalia Davtyan

Natalia Davtyan is an Armenian photographer and visual artist from Russia, mostly working in the realms of documentary and portrait photography. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interior and Spatial Design from UAL, London and a Master in Photography and Design in ELISAVA in Barcelona. Since 2011 Natalia had been into mobile photography but only almost ten years later she decided to continue her training with postgraduate studies to learn to tell stories visually.

Photography is the medium that helps Natalia to speak about identity, gender inequality and mental health. She is currently developing a long-term project in which she explores herself and the lives of her mother and grandmother. Their early marriages led to many country changes (from Nagorno-Karabakh to Georgia then to Armenia and to Russia) and dedicating themselves to their families. As Natalia digs through the family archive she analyzes a typical life of an Armenian woman that is dictated by men. She intends to show freedom of identity choice independent from others that is also helping her to find her authentic self.
