Dream Of The Wood City is a project that started in 2009, when I took the first pictures of tree stumps around me (and I still have that hobby). It looked to me like cities, with different ways connected together. I wanted to build a montage from my material, then print it on a canvas, and draw an utopian city with india ink, as the dream of a child, in a dream mood.
From the beginning, I wanted to do a series, where each number starts with a print of the same photo montage. Then I draw for few months. The first print was in April 2014, when I started to draw on the first "Dream Of The Wood City". I just finished Dream Of The Wood City 07 two days ago. That's a series in progress. As long as I have new graphic ideas, got inspired, I continue.
During this years, my graphic style and technique evolved. The first idea was to represent both a view from above, as taken from the sky, natural landscapes, urban, geological, interacting with each other. But also an image that would look like these geography maps hanging in the classrooms of schools, with pastel colors.
The first numbers are figurative, but it evolved and got more abstract during time, mostly representing networks, and how things are connected together in nature. That could be geological , or communication networks, or networks or water under the earth. We can imagine any connection betwen different things. My drawings are now often taken from my own photographs, using the technique of translucent paper on a photo print.
So my drawings are like imprints of real photographs I take in my environment. I'm always searching for new forms that could be used for Dream Of The Wood City, or some other projects... There is a lot of photography in my drawings.
But there's also a big part of improvisation, to mix graphic forms that are more prepared (from photographs), with improvised parts which are more like graphic haikus, inspired by calligraphy, abstract painting in the present moment. And to keep the idea that art is sometimes built of accidents.
