I have always been intrigued by the evolution of adolescents in today’s society. They live in a world where it is difficult for them to find their place, no longer children but not yet women.
The light, chosen to paint portrait of mature women during the Dutch golden age, creates an ambiguity about the subject’s age, giving a troubling ”woman-child” image.
This work is a self-portrait. I tried to transmit my personal critical look on these girls’ faces, using them as a “base” on which I could mould my own expression: a quizzical expression, which seeks to destabilize and to create an uneasiness with the spectator.
