ISIS in South East Asia: the siege of Marawi

In May 2017, ISIS and affiliated groups took over the Philippine town of Marawi. The siege lasted five months and resulted in huge damage to property and moreover the deaths of over one thousand people. At least 50,000 former residents of Marawi remain displaced, and are likely to remain so for some years while "Ground Zero" is rebuilt. In the meantime the town is under military control. The conflict was largely unreported outside the Philippines.
