This series is titled Cautivo Unbound. It is a set of candid portraits taken at the Union Square Subway Station in New York City. In post-production, I am disassembling the portrait and layering-in fragments of still-life photographs of metal from subway railings, concrete from subway platforms, and the surface of subway cars, all from the same train station. I am interested in disassembling the image as a way of questioning the legitimacy, meanings, and symbols embedded in our consciousness by culture. I am also exploring the relationships between an individual and their habitat. I am using archaeology excavation sampling-techniques and Merce Cunningham’s chaos theory to maximize the randomness of individuals selected. At the expense of sounding like a fool, I am embarrassed to confess that I may be “painting in” photography fragments as a way of exploring metaphors depicting how human consciousness may be transcending the limits of the human body.
