I have met most of the subjects through social media. They all live in Toronto but have been born in a Latin American country. They are immigrants. They've had to learn another language, live in a different culture, withstand the weather and economical duress.
Before taking their portrait I asked them to send me a brief paragraph about themselves. Total freedom, no theme and/or hints about what to say. no specific subject. They had to write whatever seemed important in the moment. Also, they were not told to dress in a pre-determined way. They came in front of my camera and allowed me, a total stranger, to capture their faces and stories.
All of the photographs are taken using a sort of passport picture aesthetic. What the authorities see. The words give context, the words give them their humanity back after the impersonal crossing of the border.
This is an ongoing project.
