Only Barely Still
Longyearbyen is the world's northernmost settlement of any kind. Traditionally a company town, most mining operations have moved and made place for tourism and research instead. No trees are growing here, the cold only permits a naked environment, covered in white pillow-like mountains. This ongoing project observes the contrasts between the place's extremities and fragilities and its inhabitants. Who are these people, why did they move here and how do they deal with the harshness of the cold, the polar nights and midnight sun?
