Our ancestors visited Roman gladiatorial games, honoured death in pilgrimages to Canterbury, and enjoyed days out at public executions.
Why are we attracted to tragedy and death?
Such visits to those places might be motivated by a desire for actual or symbolic encounters with death. I came across these Shearwater birds washed to shore on Macmasters beach in NSW, seeing those birds i was completely amazed by the beauty of nature. These events, when Shearwaters wash to shore are called wrecks. They are on return leg of a massive migration and are too tired or hungry to go on. Annual migration of 15 000 km that started in the Tasman sea in April. Shearwaters are swimmers and flyers, they never make landfall until they reach their nesting grounds down south.
