Approximately 45 minutes. This is the amount of time the average American takes to get from home to work and back again. A commute by public transit is a shared, communal experience with numerous people almost all of whom are total strangers. Even though we commuters regularly travel at approximately the same time each workday with our fellow commuters, often over extended periods of time, we remain essentially strangers. And few people give more than a passing glance to what goes on around them. In this long-term project, I discovered that I was intrigued by this facet of urban and suburban life.
