Die 80er im Ruhrgebiet - The 80s in the Ruhrgebiet
Project info

....... photographer Reinhard Krause seems to have spied on his subjects. The former photo design student from Dortmund was hanging out at carnival sessions, in clubs and at wave parties. While Kraftwerk were designing their art-techno in Duesseldorf and Mick Jagger and Freddy Mercury turned Munich into the muggy glam capital of Europe for a few summers, the kids in Borbeck were waiting for the regional train with a walkman on their ears. The melancholy in Krause's photos is deeply moving: People show an introverted instead of an ecstatic when celebrating; they seem laborious instead of weightless; their bodies still feel the exertions of past decades. And living with the suspicion that another pit, another steel plant will be shut down after the weekend. The neon-bright hedonism of the eighties? Not here. (LABKULTUR)

(Spiegel Online)
