In the words of Horace, “A picture is a poem without words.” Poetry’s power to illuminate, to bewitch, to transform is inherent in photographs. Engaged in their own wordless poetry, the subjects in this series also seemed attuned to their own soundless melodies. Absorbed in those brief moments when a new or recalled sensation infuses the spirit; focused intensely on the imminent, or immersed in the personal metaphysics of losing touch with the here and now, they are either distracted by emotion, or have drifted into private reveries of memories, lost or forgotten.
