I started this project three years ago, when I metaphorically met my grandfather because a familial secret was accidentally revealed: my grandfather was exiled in Mexico. He fled from Tacaná due to his political involvement during the Ubiquista dictatorship in Guatemala 1931-44.
By approaching the topic I got barely few chances to gather information about my grandfather’s exile. Though his relevant leadership in his community I have been told a bunch of anecdotes all the way I tried to dig into those days of militar repression.
Tacaná emerges from my personal need to explore what is idealized and the self-censorship of memory to evoke a story that refuses to be told: the brutality of dictatorship and exile.
