Jilamara Artists and Tobias Titz

Tiwi people paint Jilamara on their body, on a screen, or on canvas. In the old days people did Jilamara by making a scar on their body with a shell.

Jilamara can have lots of different meanings - like the pattern of a crocodile, a shark, water, a coral reef, or the tide. It can tell the story of any of the four skin groups - sun, pandanus, rock, or mullet (fish).

Tobias Titz collaborated with Jilamara Artists from Milikapiti, Tiwi Islands.
The artists share the image making process by etching their Jilamara in the wet emulsion of the large format Polaroid negative.
