The title of my series, comes from Ernest Hemingway's linked short stories novel, In Our Time. Deeply effected by the changes WWI and industrialization had in the world, Hemingway eliminated the word "peace" from his title taken from the popular Biblical hymn.
In our contemporary society, we too are experiencing the same shifts in world events effecting our cultures and perspectives.
I created this series from a sense of wanting to blend the past and present, the old and new. I used a digital camera but used a printing process that is older than silver gelatin printing.
The Jardim da Estrela in Lisbon and the Escadaria José António Marques are places that conjure up a nostalgia of the last century and what we may perceive as peaceful. And under the glow of lamplight these places can transport us to a moment of quietude.
The idea of peaceful times may be a dream, a notch of nostalgia for something that has never truly existed in the purest form. But In Our Times, just like in the past, we have moments of peace and this is what I've captured.
The process of the creating gel prints isn't about perfection. I strived to make each photo what it wanted to be - a version of a moment. I wanted to create pieces that celebrated nuance and texture, while leaving enough room for the audience to create their own stories.
