The presented series of photographs is part of my newly started private photo project "I want to tell you about shoes".
It was a Saturday late afternoon when I took the line u8 heading to Neukölln to see my friend Micah. With my Nikon D750 in the pocket I was so excited to capture some great moments of life in Neukölln, the scenes that always remind me of my hometown, Hanoi (and especially during the pandemic, I feel homesick more than ever as I have not been able to visit my family in Viet Nam due to travel restrictions and complication). Arriving at Neukölln Rathaus station I looked for a quiet corner to wait for Micah, then for some reason I started paying attention to shoes of people at the U-bahn platform. At a moment I took out my camera and made one after other shots of the shoes I saw. And so my project „I want to tell you about shoes“ was born.
I think like clothing, not only do shoes tell a lot about a person, they are cultures, they are histories. I remember on the first photos I made in Berlin (that are also submitted here), a friend of mine commented “only sport shoes” and my answer was „it is also Berlin, what else do you expect!“ and she agreed nodding.
All the works are mis en scene images without the people knowing that they (their shoes) were photographed. I like making photos when people are not aware and consequently I am challenged to always be ready for a quick shot using available lights and take advantage of all present elements to create the image composition.
The project makes me feel everyday alive and I am hopeful that the pandemic will be over soon, so I can travel internationally to enrich my photo project. I enjoy honing my photography skill while exploring at the same time what fashion actually means to each individual. Looking into future, as natural as it is, the fashion world will evolve and I see myself as a witness of that process and my photos an evidence.
