Badlands
As a young boy in the 1950s I spent many days exploring the dramatically textured Badlands of southern Alberta in search of dinosaur bones. Later, when I began to make photographs in the 1980s I was powerfully drawn to this feral landscape. My initial black and white photographs were disappointing but then I began to experiment with Kodak High Speed Infrared film. Skies darkened dramatically, textures were powerfully drawn and vegetation had a searing glow. The special film was discontinued in 2007 but I discovered a cache of it several years ago and returned once again to photograph in this extraordinary landscape.
