My choice of subject comes from my interest in ideas about beauty, life and a reflection on mortality. After a fifteen year career as an advertising photographer wherein perfection, flawlessness and desirability were the holy-grail, I continue to seek out the inherent beauty in subject matter that has long passed its use-by date. These parsnips were pulled from my own garden and never reached the nirvana of the advertiser’s expectations. These ‘Memento mori’ were grown in a medium lacking the right combination of nutrients and soil friability, Dug but left on the surface of the garden bed for the elements to assist with their ageing these forked and misshapen roots, have taken on the persona of demonic life forms, sea creatures and humanistic body parts. These are camera-less images made on a flatbed scanner.
