Traversing Pride is an ongoing photographic project that explores what Pride events are like for people with disabilities from the point of view of a wheelchair user. Navigating pride events can be quite difficult due to crowds of standing bodies that tower over you. Able-bodied people tend not to be aware of their surroundings, especially when alcohol is involved. Queers with disabilities are either completely ignored or being trampled by our counterparts, and often made to feel like we are in the way. The gay community prides itself on being inclusive but only for a small demographic, mostly consisting of cis gendered, white, able-bodied men.
Being a gay wheelchair user has its perks, though. I am and extremely visual person and one of my favorite things to look at are certain areas of the male body. Fortunately for me, my viewpoint aligns with these parts, giving me an up close and personal luck. My street photography explores the viewpoint of being a wheelchair user while making social commentary on the juxtaposition between the disabled and able-bodied communities.
