Horiren and the Japanese Traditional Tattoo

An intimate look into the life of one of the very few women practicing Tebori, or the traditional “stick and poke” method of tattooing in Japan. This is an offshoot of my work on craftsmanship - traditional tattooing is extremely taboo in Japan, yet it echoes celebrated woodblock artists like Kuniyoshi and Hokusai. This work was partially published in Huck Magazine in 2019
