The foundation of my work is the study of architecture and generally human occupied spaces. I aim to study the atmosphere of the area and the behaviour of people within that area and therefore the relationship between a space (building, cityscape, landscape) and the people within it.
This series of images is an architectural study and profile of The National Theatre in London. I use traditional methods to capture the character of a building and the impact it has on myself and its surroundings. The National Theatre has a significant impact on its visitors and its surroundings. My aim is to find original points of view and show these to viewers and hope that these moments/representations of The National Theatre have an impact on them.
I shoot most of my architectural work on black and white film, this specifically is shot on Ilford Pan F 50 because it is exceptionally effect for architecture on a bright day. Black and white photography helps people focus on the now (or the then). It strips away distractions and gets straight to what's important. In my experience, people tend to concentrate more on a black and white photograph. It catches one’s eye and holds on to it for longer. It also makes an image timeless and it makes people really appreciate what they are seeing.
I hope that this combined with the brutalist architecture of The National Theatre will result in a significant impact on the viewer and provoke thought.
