Gold mining in the Yukon is an industry/sought after tradition that spans 125 years. In a world that has changed drastically in that time frame, mining gold in the Yukon hasn't stopped. I aim to explore the history that dates back to the first findings in 1896 that commenced the gold rush & develop a better understanding of the contrasts, as well as similarities, if any, found in the practice today compared to that of its origins.
I was given full access to an active mine site during the summer where I documented every part of the day to day activities of a present day gold mine. From breakfast at 6:30 to the night shift worker getting things done under the midnight sun, I got as close as I could while making sure to not interfere with the work being done.
This summer was largely about building a foundation for the work as well as the relationships/comfortability with the crew as I intend on going back to continue the work in 2022.
