This series is from the photo shoot for the album "Island Bop" from Shuffle & Bang, the father-son duo of Kim “Pops” Horn and Korey “Kingston” Horn. The music is Korey and Pops personified - Korey’s reggae, ska and dubstep blending seamlessly with Pops’ traditional jazz vocals, honed over decades in the dance halls of Jamaica.
This project was deeply personal for me; Korey is a friend first, client second. Like Korey, I call my dad Pops. Like Korey my relationship with my father has been uneven but today is in a better place. Like Korey, my father instilled in me a love of jazz. Sending my father a copy of the album was one of the most gratifying moments I’ve experienced as an artist.
My intent thematically is to present the idea of the "Old School" and "New School" coming together across generations to keep their musical culture alive and vital. Visually the images were meant to evoke the Blue Note Records jazz album covers of the 50's and 60's (Francis Wolff, house photographer). I cropped the photos with a 1:1 ratio to match the album cover format.
